Title Announcement: Realm Knights from Zenescope

Zenescope Entertainment has announced plans to bring together a cast of its most popular Grimm Universe characters for the upcoming mini-series which will be entitled Realm Knights. The company best known for re-telling classic stories with a unique blend of horror, tongue-in-cheek humor and great action, is bringing out its heavy hitters for this brand new four issue mini-series that teams up its fan-favorite characters such as Robyn Hood, Van Helsing, Red Riding Hood and Sela Mathers. Together the group forms the Realm Knights, a powerful modern day team of heroes that is chosen to help eliminate daunting supernatural threats against our world.

“It's a great mix of fantasy, action, horror and humor.” says writer Patrick Shand. “It's a blast to take these characters out of their separate titles and allow them to come together against common threats while also trying to get along with one other. For Grimm Fairy Tales fans, the elements will be familiar but also feel fresh and different.”

Review: Vampires - The Eternal #2 (of 3)

My honest to god biggest gripe about this series is that Van Helsing is paraded around on the cover and only has a back story in the entire issue. I thought that eventually she’d be making an appearance in the series, but with her lack of presence in this issue (just a back story again) it’s clear that she’s only here for the covers. It’s annoying since there are plenty of female characters in this series that could be paraded around on the cover in her place and would at least make sense with the story.

Though this story is about the Vampires, it’s clearly just about Samira’s role in the Unleashed events and unfortunately there not very interesting in this issue. The story picks up in the same spot as last time with Samira running into her Sire and her old Vampire crew in Paris. She tells her pet werewolf to piss off and kill something while she gets caught up with the Vamps. As they’re catching up on old times, they’re suddenly gunned down by the French equivalent of a SWAT team and or the military. They all pop back up and slaughter the soldiers and afterwards we flash to Samira’s past again as we see her on her first day of her transition.

First Look: Tyler Kirkham's Screwed #1 from Zenescope

It's been a bit since Zenescope launched a series that didn't tie into their overall created universe and Screwed definitely looks interesting. It's interesting that Kirkham is getting more and more into the writing aspect of comics; not many artists can make that transition. Here's a blurb from about the series and then the preview is after the jump.

A young woman awakens in a hospital covered in scars as if she had been taken apart and put back together again. Her mind is as fragmented as her body, leaving her delusional and seeing monsters everywhere. Is this the work of a serial killer, or something far worse? FBI Agent Erin Scott intends to help her find out, with or without the approval of her superiors in this visionary modern, Mature re-imagining of the Frankenstein legend from acclaimed artist/creator Tyler Kirkham ( New Guardians, Teen Titans, and Amazing Spider-Man).

Review: Family Pets #1

When you think of all-ages titles you don’t think of Zenescope, which is why they came up with the Silver Dragon Books imprint. That’s were Family Pets resides, but it’s the imprints and company’s first digital only title to be released. I’ll tell you right now that it’s cute as hell. I was honestly taken back by this issue and the story in general.

We meet Thomasina, a young girl that lost her parents in a mysterious car accident at an early age. She now lives with her grandma, in the basement of her aunt and uncle’s house. As she heads to school we’re given a quick run through of her family members as she checks in with grandma or abuela as she prefers to be called. Next we meet her uncle, aunt and cousin Neil. On the way to school we meet the final family member her other cousin Elizabeth. At school Thomasina’s life is that of a typical high school loner and she even describes it that way, but there are too many people being stupid for her to care. During lunch she heads to the band room to listen to Smitty play his French horn and relax. They don’t talk, but she gives him the dreamy eyes while he plays.

Review: Robyn Hood: Wanted #1

No need to worry because you don’t need to read Robyn Hood’s first volume in order to understand this new comic featuring the female version of Robin Hood. When reading the first volume of Robyn the action picked up right when you opened the comic. After the first issue, she was already in Myst.

This comic started off a little slow. There was action but when I see a title like Robyn Hood, I get selfish and just want to see arrows flying around everywhere. I think that is why I prefer Robyn in Myst. She can carry a bow around and no one takes a second look. She can totally just kick ass and run into the woods if need be. On earth, she can’t do much of anything. She wears an eye patch, about the only badass thing she can get away with.

The issue starts out in Myst but not with Robyn. She is on earth running from the popo. She wants to find answers of why she was left on earth as a baby and on the front doorstep of a god awful father and a mother who died too soon.

Review: Vampires – The Eternal #1

Zenescope’s Unleashed crossover began this week and Vampires: The Eternal is one of the connecting mini-series to the overall story. While Samantha covered the main Unleashed series, I only had time to check out the Vampires issue so I’m not 100% in the loop on the overall crossover. I did however enjoy this series even if it mostly served as an introduction to the Vamps associated with the Grimm Fairy Tale universe.

The opening is a bit strange as a woman is running from a guy chasing her. He shows his Vampire teeth and says some threatening yet very Anne Rice inspired dialog before catching up with the woman. He takes her to the ground and the two begin laughing and kissing. After a moment it’s revealed that he is in fact a vampire and that the two are in love. Around this time our Vamp from the cover arrives and cuts the man’s head off. The woman screams that he wasn’t going to hurt her, which is exactly why the other Vamp killed him. This is our first introduction to Samira who is attempting to unite the Vampires under her leadership.

Review: Unleashed #1

Okay let me first say that any superhero who can wear glasses while in full battle adds to my list of insanely awesome people who wear glasses. Sela shows us how cool it can be to look like a nerd and also beat up on some vampires. Unleashed is another release apart of the Grimm Fairy Tales from Zenescope. The story started a little shaky for me. The Being, reminding me of Lord Zedd, has opened the Shadowlands. The Being is so powerful Zeus and his family has decided to stop him at once. The beginning happened so fast that I didn’t know how I would feel about the comic. It seemed wasted when we got to the real heroes. Sela, Belinda, and Van Helsing are the true stars that made me adorn this opening comic.

Samira is The Being’s second in command. She craves freedom and a place where she can live with no fear of the sun. The story still jumps around between all interesting characters. The story starts to come together and I can see the attraction to this Grimm comic. Sela and Shang met up in order to stop a wave of vampires on earth. The fight scene is short but dynamic and only makes me think that once the comic gets rolling these scenes will amplify into perfection. Van Helsing wears her Mad Hatter hat with pose. Who else can attach holsters to their fishnets? I will tell you, Van Helsing can. I am wondering why Kate Beckinsale hasn’t done this in one of her movies yet…?
