High Crimes returns this week and I'm can't wait to read it! Might be a few days though, but I'm still looking forward to it. Kinski looks very interesting and Hardman's style is looking very good. We'll probably have reviews up this week so check back, but read the previews in the meantime.

Review: Skybreaker #2

What I really like about this series is that you can see all of the cogs in place moving, but even though you know what’s there you still have no idea what’s coming and that’s what’s so entertaining. There are very few Western’s in comics, which is a damn shame since it’s a genre that has a rich history in the medium. If executed properly is an easy sell, at least to anyone that’s looking for a good story. I’ll be clear right now, Skybreaker is an easy sell.

The story kicks off with the main character the self-dubbed “Skybreaker” as his life flashes before his eyes and thus walks the reader through his past ever so briefly. In the present he’s laid out bleeding and asks for the man that’s helping him to tell a woman named Talutah that he didn’t mean for any of it to happen, but the man tells him to say it himself as he begins working on the bullet hole in his gut.

First Look: Monkey Brain Comics on Sale 5/1/13

My first thought when seeing this was, "Shit! Skybreaker came out today!" I wish I had a review for you today, but it looks like it'll be tomorrow. My second thought was along the lines of how incredible both of these covers are. Skybreaker's is rad due to the gore and the fact that it leaves you questioning how that duel pistol holding man is alive, while Masks & Mobsters is just a stunning work of composition. The glass makes the two men on the hill the focal point of the piece, but they force your eye down into the liquid where we find a skull. Just a stunning visual metaphor. I'm getting both issues and I would recommend that you check them out after the jump, at the very least.

First Look: Mask of the Red Panda # on Sale 4/24/13

I have bought the first two issues of this series, but I've yet to sit down with them. I think I'm still going to buy this issue and then jam through all of them for a super rich reading experience. In the meantime you can check out the preview and see if you want to put down three bucks for all three issues yourself.

$.99 – Ages 12+ – The thrilling conclusion of this debut story arc! The Red Panda and the Flying Squirrel now know all of the players, but can they call the tune in time to prevent the power of the sun itself from falling into mortal hands?

Title Announcement: Code Monkey Save World from Monkey Brian Comics

Comics writer Greg Pak (“Planet Hulk,” “Batman/Superman,” “Magneto Testament”), internet superstar musician Jonathan Coulton, and artist Takeshi Miyazawa(“Runaways”) have joined forces to create a graphic novel that stars the much-loved monsters and super-villains from classic Coulton songs like “Code Monkey,” “Skullcrusher Mountain,” “The Future Soon,” and “Re: Your Brains.” The Kickstarter for the project launched Monday morning and can be reached via www.codemonkeycomix.com.

“Code Monkey Save World” follows Code Monkey, the put-upon coding monkey from theeponymous Coulton song, as he teams up with the seething, lovelorn super-villain from Coulton’s song “Skullcrusher Mountain.” The unlikely duo fight robots, office worker zombies, and maybe even each other as they struggle to impress the amazing women for whom they fruitlessly long.

Review: Frost - Rogue State #1

After reading The Activity for so long, I’m kind of spoiled on realistic military stories. That said, Frost is generally realistic, but comes from a very different fiction than the aforementioned Image title. Frost is kind of like the ultimate soldier, but there is a sadness in his eyes that is present in every scene. He was turned into a killing machine, but he may very well prove to have a heart of gold.

To sum up the zero issue, Frost was sent to retrieve a defecting Al-Qaeda agent that has information about the location of a WMD. He ended up having to shoot the man when they were spotted talking prior to his extraction. Frost ends up having to kill a lot of men following them and carries the injured, bleeding man that he shot… across the desert.

We pick up in this issue with Frost coming to his check point a full day ahead of schedule. The U.S. soldiers get them back to their base where Frost is chewed out by his handler. Frost isn’t military, but more of a black ops merc. His current handler Donovan is a dick and chews him out for shooting their contact. Frost tells him off and leaves, but Donovan follows after trying to get under his skin. It works and Frost decks Donovan fracturing his jaw. Donovan asks the General to stop him, but having just been told off by him seconds before he just watches Frost leave.

Review: Theremin #1

This comic has a very high concept and because of that there isn’t a ton of “pay off” to the issue, but I can definitely see the smaller bits of coolness that are present in issue feeding into a larger “pay off” in the future. The series is follows the real life inventor Leon Theremin, but set in a fictional world… a kick ass fictional world.

At its core it’s a story about time travel and that means that the time line is fluid rather than being in a straight line. It kicks off with Theremin holding a gun on the Russian Chairman Vladimir Lenin and asking if he has any last words. We don’t get to hear those words because Theremin is quick to pull the trigger and shoots a ray gun that splatters and melts the Chairman’s head. Suddenly some KGB Temporal Camo bodyguards come out of the wall sending Theremin running. He’s not super worried, but he knows he doesn’t have enough distance between them before he makes his jump. They fall into the “Red” and Theremin spins around and kills the KGB bodyguards before finding his exit, which is the exact same scene we opened with. Theremin introduces himself to the reader as he kills the Chairman for the second time.
