First Look: Monkey Brain Comics on Sale 5/1/13

My first thought when seeing this was, "Shit! Skybreaker came out today!" I wish I had a review for you today, but it looks like it'll be tomorrow. My second thought was along the lines of how incredible both of these covers are. Skybreaker's is rad due to the gore and the fact that it leaves you questioning how that duel pistol holding man is alive, while Masks & Mobsters is just a stunning work of composition. The glass makes the two men on the hill the focal point of the piece, but they force your eye down into the liquid where we find a skull. Just a stunning visual metaphor. I'm getting both issues and I would recommend that you check them out after the jump, at the very least.

Monkeybrain Comics is pleased to announce the premiere print editions of their popular digital-first comics, heading to stores this summer.

Chris Roberson and Dennis Culver’s EDISON REX gets it all started in June with a collection published by IDW. EDISON REX is the story of the world’s greatest villain, who finally defeats his lifelong nemesis, the world’s greatest hero, and then has to decide what to do with the rest of his life.

If You Buy Masks & Mobsters #5 Red Cross Gets The Money

Over on Robot 6 the creators of Masks & Mobsters announced in an interview that all of the sales for issue #5 of their comic will be donated to the Red Cross. Personally I think that it's great that they're doing something like this because they're small market creators. Sure when Matt Fraction says he's donating his royalties for an issue of the top selling Hawkeye everyone covers it, but here we have two indie creators that just want to do their part so I'm helping spread the word. Buy Masks & Mobsters #5 for a worth cause and you also get a comic out of it as well.

Review: Masks and Mobsters #1

Well the second wave of Monkey Brain Comics stared two weeks back and I think that a lot of people missed out on this release. The story is just as the title describes it, a meshing of the world of mobsters and vigilantes. It opens with Bobby holding a gun to the side of the head of a man down on his knees counting towards three. Twenty four hours earlier Bobby is picking up his boss from jail having gotten arrested the night before. He explains that it’s all just for show since he owns the cops, but he wants to know who narc’ed him out to Doctor Daylight. Bobby doesn’t seem too thrilled by his job assignment.

He begins taking out thug after thug leaving a very large body count in his wake. Bobby finds himself at a poker game with a few mobsters and we find our begging mobster Gus sitting among the group. Gus makes a comment about seeing him talking to Doctor Daylight and instantly Bobby shoots up the room leaving only Gus, he asks him one question… who else did he tell?

This book was pretty cool. The story was simple, but the pacing and action keeps you on your toes while reading it; the third act and the last page in general are very cool and worth the price of admission alone. Bobby isn’t a very deep character yet, but he’s very interesting and his motivations as a character will play nice as the series continues.
