Title Announcement: Realm Knights from Zenescope

Zenescope Entertainment has announced plans to bring together a cast of its most popular Grimm Universe characters for the upcoming mini-series which will be entitled Realm Knights. The company best known for re-telling classic stories with a unique blend of horror, tongue-in-cheek humor and great action, is bringing out its heavy hitters for this brand new four issue mini-series that teams up its fan-favorite characters such as Robyn Hood, Van Helsing, Red Riding Hood and Sela Mathers. Together the group forms the Realm Knights, a powerful modern day team of heroes that is chosen to help eliminate daunting supernatural threats against our world.

“It's a great mix of fantasy, action, horror and humor.” says writer Patrick Shand. “It's a blast to take these characters out of their separate titles and allow them to come together against common threats while also trying to get along with one other. For Grimm Fairy Tales fans, the elements will be familiar but also feel fresh and different.”

Review: Unleashed #1

Okay let me first say that any superhero who can wear glasses while in full battle adds to my list of insanely awesome people who wear glasses. Sela shows us how cool it can be to look like a nerd and also beat up on some vampires. Unleashed is another release apart of the Grimm Fairy Tales from Zenescope. The story started a little shaky for me. The Being, reminding me of Lord Zedd, has opened the Shadowlands. The Being is so powerful Zeus and his family has decided to stop him at once. The beginning happened so fast that I didn’t know how I would feel about the comic. It seemed wasted when we got to the real heroes. Sela, Belinda, and Van Helsing are the true stars that made me adorn this opening comic.

Samira is The Being’s second in command. She craves freedom and a place where she can live with no fear of the sun. The story still jumps around between all interesting characters. The story starts to come together and I can see the attraction to this Grimm comic. Sela and Shang met up in order to stop a wave of vampires on earth. The fight scene is short but dynamic and only makes me think that once the comic gets rolling these scenes will amplify into perfection. Van Helsing wears her Mad Hatter hat with pose. Who else can attach holsters to their fishnets? I will tell you, Van Helsing can. I am wondering why Kate Beckinsale hasn’t done this in one of her movies yet…?

Review: The Jungle Book – Last of the Species #2 (of 5)

Every time I read a story with talking animals I think of Animal Farm. That book has scarred me and stayed with me like few other books have. This is obviously not Animal Farm as it is something spun out of Jungle Book, but they do have one thing in common… animal on animal violence. I’m not talking about the law of the jungle and the circle of life; I’m talking about war which is a distinctly human characteristic. For everything this book is and does, that part is the part that I pay the most attention to.

Mowglii has been dumped into the same waters that claimed Shere Kahn’s life. She and the wolf Tobaqui have only each other to depend on as they fight the current against tigers and elephants that have also fallen in the water. Back on land, the battle between the tigers and elephants rage on with both sides taking damage to their numbers. Dewan and Bomani turn their attention towards each other and a battle breaks out between the two humans. The cries of battle begin to spread throughout the island alerting Baloo and Bagheera, who run to investigate.

Check Out The First Three Minutes of The Grimm Fairy Tales Animated Series

If you've seen Heavy Metal then you're about to have a feeling of nostalgia trickle in on you. The gore is definitely the best part and I loved the way the narrator at the end says, "Battle" so keep an ear out for it. Trailer's after the jump, but first here's what Zenescope had to say.

The pilot was fully funded through our 2012 Kickstarter project.

We have completed the pilot for the animated series and are in the final stages of getting all of our rewards together to ship out to the backers. Overall, our fan-base and pledgers are just excited to have been a part of the process and have been extremely supportive, and patient as we get the rewards in order.

Review: Robyn Hood #5 (of 5)

It’s an ending, you can’t complain about that. There were a few surprises and then others that were pretty obvious since the Grimm universe never truly ends anything. Did I get my wish about Robyn returning home? Yes, but I almost wish that I hadn’t. Not a lot I can’t spoil by talking about this issue so expect a short review and that should also serve as your warning.

When we left Robyn she was about to be murdered by arrows rather than fifty other more effective ways of death; but she remains calm and does some gymnastic moves and dodges the arrows that were for some reason shot wildly towards her. One of the them breaks her ropes and Little John throws her her bow and she gets to work. People die and maybe she kills the king, maybe she doesn’t. The end result is that the kingdom is freed and Robyn heads home. You’d think the story would almost end here or just have one scene showing her executing her revenge, but it doesn’t there is plenty to look forward to upon Robyn's return to Earth.

You’ve already had your warning so I’m jumping into this. The entire scene with the King invalidated everything done in the last issue. It was utterly pointless and we really could have combined the two parts and made one. As for Robyn’ true revenge… it was alright. The fact that for three issues we’ve been following this murderous rapist around and all he can think about is Robyn, and then in this issue he forgets her… was unbelievable. Literally this character’s only line of dialog has been about Robyn and forcing himself on her and getting away with it. I just didn’t buy it.

Review: Sleepy Hollow #4

Issue four concludes just as one would have expected: revenge.  The Horseman wraps up the vengeance for Craig’s death.  The writers throw us one gimmick that rates only a scintilla of impressiveness.  And then the book ends with a whimper.

Look, I’m going to be honest.  I love the Headless Horseman character.  Any version would have been amazing, and I would champion the revival of this horrific figure.  The only problem is that this book has three creators and one writer, and none of them could come up with anything that shocked me, surprised me, or simply entertained me.

To give you some context why I’m so disappointed with Sleepy Hollow, know I’m the only one who liked Jason X.  You know the Friday the 13th movie where the machete wielding unstoppable killer went into space.  It took the whole franchise in a different direction the same way Leprechaun in the Hood did for the Leprechaun films.

PR: Zenescope Announces Unleashed Summer Crossover Event

Zenescope Entertainment has announced plans for a major Spring/Summer event entitled UNLEASHED.  The massive release will include six separate mini-series and a total of 24 issues (some being oversized issues) that tie directly into the Grimm Fairy Tales Universe. The epic comic book event will delve directly into the world of horror monsters while following those with the skills to hunt them.  Grimm Fairy Tales UNLEASHED is the main seven issue mini-series that begins when hundreds of formerly trapped vampires, werewolves, demons and zombies are all released on Earth by a very powerful entity known as “The Being.”  Now, four separate monster hunters (who fans will get to know in separate “Unleashed” mini-series), must join forces along with Grimm’s kick-ass heroine Sela Mathers in order to stop them.

The five other mini-series will lead directly into UNLEASHED and follow the terrifying stories of the monsters that exist within the Grimm Universe.  These series are The Eternal (Vampires), The Unseen (Demons), The Hunger (Werewolves) and The Cursed (Zombies).  The fifth series entitled “The Hunters: Shadowlands” will follow those who are chosen to hunt these wretched creatures, including Zenescope’s reimagined Van Helsing.
