Review: Pirate Eye – A Pirate’s Life is Not For Me (One-Shot)

For those of you unfamiliar with the Pirate Eye series, it’s about a pirate named Smithy that has turned to the life of a private eye; hence the incredibly simple yet awesome title of Pirate Eye. In the first one-shot we were introduced to Smithy and the world he lives in as he investigated a woman that worked in a brothel; the Governor wanted her as his mistress and house keeper, but not if she was a murderer. Though the discovery of whether she was a man killer or not was easy enough to come by, Smithy uncovered a much larger plot that brought the girl there in the first place. He showed the reader that he was no ordinary Pirate and that made him quite awesome.

The new one-shot begin with him getting his ass beat by a man whose wife has left him because of Smithy revealing to her that he’s a cheater. Even though Smithy or Pirate as everyone calls him is getting his ass beat he still cracks jokes calling the man cheap for not offering him a better price. The assault is broken up by two of Parrot’s men; Parrot being the Kingpin of the town. The two thugs Cyclops and the Mute tell the man and his friends to piss off or find themselves on the wrong side of a gun. Smithy hates Parrot and doesn’t like these two coming to his rescue because it means that Parrot wants something from him. They take him out on a boat in to the harbor and along the way reveal to him that they’re visiting Pirates.

Review: Pirate Eye – Mark of the Black Widow (One-Shot)

Pirate Eye has to be one of the inadvertently funniest things I’ve ever read. Make no mistake this is a very serious story, but the concept behind it is just humorous to me. Why no one else has thought to make a Pirate a Private Eye is beyond me, but I’m glad that it exists. This quirky story manages to capture the formula of the genre while staying true to the era in which it takes place and is actually a great issue.

It begins as it always does in a P.I. story, with a drunk waiting for someone to come to his office and give him work. Govenor Greyflask has come to the man simply known as Smitty for his assistance. He’s fallen in love with a girl at the brothel, but before he brings her home to be his mistress/house keeper he needs to verify one thing. See the woman has a mark on her, a mark that signifies that she’s killed a man before and he doesn’t want to bring her in to his home if she has. Smitty coheres half of his fee out of the man before setting out on what he thinks will be an easy enough payday. He stops by a bar and begins asking questions until he dupes a man to start telling him stories about local whores. He finds out that there are three new ones at Madame Collette’s but that one of them is in fact marked, though no man can verify it. Smitty hates brothels but it looks like he has no choice but to visit the woman and ask her some questions, but not before paying his dues to Parrot the Kingpin of the town.
