The Westwood Witches #1 (of 4)

Witches are a tough genre of horror to do well. They can either be incredibly cheesy or The Craft and while that movie is still terrible to this day, it’s difficult not to see its influence on the genre constantly. The Westwood Witches on the other hand, took a very different approach. It reminded me a lot more of an episode of Supernatural, but taken down a darker path. Make no mistake, there is no cheese here with the exception of the book series that it pokes fun at.

Not wanting to waste any time, the story begins with a man running for his life. He suddenly stops in the middle of the road and yells out saying he knows what “they” are and what “they” do. “They” remain a mystery until the man’s legs are suddenly broken while just standing there. He drags himself out of the road and runs into five women that all look fairly normal with the exception of the weapons they’re holding in their hands. One is holding a voodoo doll and has a needle stabbed into the leg of it. They begin attacking him by stabbing him, hammering nails into his body and cutting off pieces of him. He screams out in pain and in between crying he begs for mercy. They prepare him for a sacrifice and summon their demon master. The demon arrives and they ask for the vision of future, he looks at the offering and decides to grant the gift to only one of the women and singles her out from the group.

New Releases: Amigo Comics - May 2012

Hola, amigos!

We are proud to announce that our second series, The Westwood Witches, will be released this May.

The same team behind the acclaimed Drums miniseries at Image Comics tells us a whole new tale of horror that brings the witchcraft into the modern world; a macabre four-issue miniseries that will be released in May 2013.

“Jack Kurtzberg is a successful writer of young witch romance bestsellers… and he hates it so much. Suffering from writer’s block, he decides to move back to his hometown, not knowing that his new neighbors are witches, the kind of demon worshippers that would kill anyone who could disturb their dominion in Westwood.”

Title Announcement: The Westwood Witches #1

Amigo is gearing up for all of it's new properties; we already had a chance to review Rogues! and now they've announced The Westwood Witches. It's from the team that brought you Drums from Image and that was a very good series. If you want to read the preview then head here.

Press Release:

This May, AMIGO COMICS proudly presents the next horror book from El Torres and Abel García (aka Abe Hernando)THE WESTWOOD WITCHES.

The same team behind the acclaimed “Drums” miniseries at Image Comics tell us a whole new tale of horror that brings the witchcraft into the modern world. A macabre 4-issues miniseries that will be released in May, 2013.

“It’s not just about witchcraft” states El Torres, “but about beliefs, too. What seems real to us sounds like nonsense to others, and that’s the power of literature… and quackery. But overall, The Westwood Witches is a tale about neighborhood and neighbors. In this book, they’re beautiful, they’re kind, and they’re demon worshippers. You could say it’s like Desperate Housewives with macabre murderings”.

Review: Rogues! #1

The absolute easiest way to describe Rogues! is to say that it’s Conan the Barbarian with a chick sidekick, but they’re thieves. Simple right? Simple and yet you’re wondering about the story already. Another selling point of the book is that it’s intended for an adult audience; not just in its dialog and violence, but in its graphic nudity. I have never seen Juan Jose Ryp’s mature drawings and I have to say that it was fucking amazing. The art is of course great, but thankfully so is the story. Now, if you’re done thinking about boobies let’s talk about boobies… imeanthe book.

The story kicks off with our two thieves Bram and the Weasel in a bar with Bram talking up the locals with tales of their exploits. He has two half naked woman hanging from his arm and the ear of every man and woman in the place. He begins to tell a story that Weasel (his female companion) has heard one too many times and has something chucked at his head. She eggs him on to tell them the one about the chicken and how he swore he would never tell this group of bastards. Now that the group is offended he must tell them about the cursed chicken.

First Look: Rogues #1 from Amigo Comics

Well it looks like this book is hitting in April and I have to say that I'm looking forward to it mostly because of the art. I don't think I've seen Ryp tackle this type of story before so it should be interesting.

Press Release:

Juan José Ryp, artist: “The Rogues! are back in town… and I’m really happy to see this dear old series –the first series I had the honor to create with El Torres, have finally its second chance. It’s also a honor and a pleasure to introduce them to the newest readers with this first issue.”

El Torres, writer: “We have adventure, we have fun, we have jokes, bulky barbarians and gorgeous girls… and chickens! Come enter into the maze slums of Gerada, pick up your sword and brace yourselves for a big dosis of fun. Bring  along some friends. You won’t be disappointed.”
