Review: Skyward #1

Oh Skyward, why you gotta do me like that? Here’s the thing, this first chapter will be very familiar to those that enjoy the fantasy genre (or the superhero genre as well). You’ll feel like you’ve read it a million times before, but it’s quite effective in the genre which is why it’s used. It’s the perfect catalyst for the plot and it will definitely keep you coming back for more. Also if you read the FCBD edition then you’re only going to recognize one character from that story, but I’m sure the other characters will come into play later in the series.

The issue starts with Quinn and his father Corin fishing. Quinn’s a young boy and so he’s pretty excited when he gets a bit on his line, but not so excited when the fish breaks his pole to get loose. They share a father and son moment as they walk back, but as Quinn in complaining about breaking the pole his father’s hand reaches out and stops his movement. In their path is a wild boar that has a crazy look in its eye… it’s also eating a rabbit, which is pretty gross. Corin is forced to kill the boar as it charges at them and does so with one punch. Quinn thinks that it’s cool, but his dad cuts him off quickly saying that taking a life is never an easy matter to deal with. They make it home and we met Taryn: beautiful wife and mother.

Review: Ehmm Theory #2

If you haven’t started to show some interest in this comic do so now. Tagline: Boy owns talking cat and travels through different dimensions. See told you.

Larkin Ford captures some awesome art for this series. I know I am only two issues in but his drawings are so perfect. Mr. Whispers may be the cutest cat ever (besides for my own). My littlest cat loves to tea bag me when waking up in the morning. Yes, I said tea bag. It is an amazing experience. It is his way of telling me “Hey you cut my balls off but I will still tea bag you when I am hungry.” Mr. Whispers reminds me of that same I-cough-up-hair-balls-respectively personality.

We start the second issue with Alyona explaining some back history on she met Gabriel’s father. Alyona is trying to help him through these dimensions in order to learn of his father’s past. Suddenly we realize that Gabriel has a mild case of crabs. And by mild I mean one cybernetic crab chasing after him. Alyona is one badass grandmother and tries to protect her crew the best way she knows how, cursin’ and shootin’.

Review: Ghost Town #1

The concept of time travel is always something that will catch people’s eye because the creator can always come up with interesting new twists and turns for the genre. The biggest is the device that allows the time travel and the second being the effects once the device is used. This is the first story I’ve read that used time travel as a weaponized device and I like where the story and world are going.

The story kicks off in Arizona, three days before the world is changed. We meet Emil a slacker looking dude that is late for work… incidentally; he lives onsite at a research site. He finally gets dressed and meets with a co-worker that’s going to ride the elevator down with him. Emil asks if he thinks they’ll crack it today, but doubts it because it’s Monday. Well you can add the discovery of time travel to the list of things that happen on Monday because that’s exactly what happens. What happens next though… no one could see coming. Emil is a double agent and he shoots one of the other scientists instantly, followed by another leaving only the project lead alive. He tells him to give him all the information before his associates arrive because it’ll be less painful, but who knows what he picked as we move on to the next day.

Ghost Town Cover Contest at Stockton Comic Con

Stockton-Con is proud to announce its second annual all ages art contest. Beginning with this year’s contest, it will be known as the Tony DeZuniga Memorial Art Contest. Tony passed away last year, but his legacy will continue to live on with his family and those that he inspired. He made Stockton his home for the greater part of the last decade and he worked with many local artists, mentoring them when he could. He is an important figure in comic, gallery, and illustration art for several reasons. During the 1970s, he brought a realistic look from his advertising style of illustration. Some of his best work was in collaboration with John Buscema in the early issues of The Savage Sword of Conan. He also co-created Jonah Hex and The Black Orchid for DC comics and worked with a number of important stories in the comic world.

“Naming the Art Contest after Tony is such a great honor,” said Tina DeZuniga, Tony’s wife. “I wish Tony could see the success of Stockton-Con. I myself was so surprised by last year’s attendance. The organizers worked so hard and people really travelled just to attend the event. I’m so proud and so honored to be part of this event.”

Review: Night of the 80’s Undead #1 (of 3)

There are two things that you cannot say about Night of the 80’s Undead and that’s that their take on zombies isn’t different and that they don’t know the 80’s. The fact is, their take on the zombie genre is pretty damn cool and I use the term “zombie” loosely. If they’re 80’s knowledge isn’t mostly pulled from their life experience then this series is well researched to say the least. We can’t take either of those two things from the title, but does that mean it was good enough to make it stand out from all the other zombie or horror titles out there?

The first four pages act as a recap of the era; from malls to celebrities living high on the hog and goes all the way to the White House. The Cold War is at its climax and the Russians have created a virus and mixed it with the cocaine heading to the U.S. We head to the Valley of L.A. and meet Sarah who is a typical teenage girl of the 80’s with her swatch and all. Her friend arrives to take her to a party, just after they deal with her creepy step dad staring at her friend’s boobies. As they take off, Sarah takes off her “Frankie Says Relax” T-Shirt to reveal a fitted leather tube top. They chat about the party they’re attending and the fact that Sarah’s ex-boyfriend will be there.

FCBD Review: Molly Danger/ Princeless

Welcome to Free Comic Book Day! Instead of our usual lengthy reviews, we’ll be presenting more of a mini-review for some of FCBD issues. With that said, the scoring is also going to work a bit differently. Each book gets one of three scores: Pick It Up, Borrow a Friends If They Get It, Pass on It. Let’s begin!

I think a lot of people have been waiting for Jamal Igle’s Molly Danger for quite a while. Well it’s worth the wait as it is some of Igle’s best work. The story follows two helicopter pilots heading off after getting a supermech alert. We cut to the city and find a giant robot inside destroying everything. His name is Medula and he’s a brain in a jar style of robot, whose goal is to kill everyone and release them from their flesh… by putting their brains in robots. Molly arrives and a battle ensues. It was a fun story that had a great deal of realism and fantasy to it. I think those two contradiction will play well with each other for sure. The art work was incredible! Igle’s style has never looked so good.

FCBD Review: NFL Rush Zone/ Skyward

Welcome to Free Comic Book Day! Instead of our usual lengthy reviews, we’ll be presenting more of a mini-review for some of FCBD issues. With that said, the scoring is also going to work a bit differently. Each book gets one of three scores: Pick It Up, Borrow a Friends If They Get It, Pass on It. Let’s begin!

Ok so I am originally from Hartville, OH. So I spent my life going up in Canton. For those of you don’t this, Canton is home to the Football Hall of Fame. About the only thing Canton has going for them. I was excited to open the first page of this comic and witness the bridge built in honor of the Hall of Fame. Not a very exciting bridge but it pays homage to it.

The first thing, Ish, our main character asks for is tickets to a Cleveland Brown’s game. Look, not even people in Cleveland want tickets to a Brown’s game. They are bad, with hopes each year of their comeback. Anyway, it made me laugh out loud when seeing it in the comic. It is rumored that Brown’s fans are the most dedicated fans in football. Who knows? We did throw food (aka beer bottles) at the players one game because we were so disappointed in the results. That shows dedication right…?
