Artist Feature: Kaan Demircelik, Just Having Fun

Here is something you'll only find on Comic Bastards, an interview with an artist that works and lives in Turkey. I first discovered Kaan Demircelik on Tumblr. Someone had posted a piece of his from DeivantArt and I tracked him down on that site. There was a bit of a language barrier for the interview so it's pretty short. We both did our best to talk to each other and frankly Kaan did all of the heavy lifting by answering me in English. Before we get into the interview I wanted to just say how crazy talented this guy is. I delved into his personal Tumblr account and some of the pieces he does just for fun are amazing. I'm seriously thinking about collaborating with him on something. It's not going to be traditional and that's really what I like about it. You'll find that this feature is jam-packed with art. If you want to check out more of Kaan's sites then I'll link them at the end. In the meantime buy me this rad fucking shirt that he made, literally blew my mind.

CB)  What's your background in art? Are you self taught or have you attended school?

KD)  First of all I have no background in art, I never studied anything about art or the like. I graduated with a cinema and TV degree and then became a director.

CB)  What are some influences for your art style?

KD)  My first hero was Todd Mcfarlene, then i started to try drawing with a Manga style and soon discovered Joe Mad. Now I think mostly Scottie Young is awesome.

CB)  Where do you see your art going? Do you want to make a career of it?

KD)  I have a small fan community in my country with my tumblr network and instagram, but all of this is just for fun that's all.

CB)  How long does a piece like your Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles take you to finish?

KD)  I am so impatient about making illustrations that my working limit is four hours max.

CB)  Do you color your pieces by hand or do scan them into a computer to finish them?

KD)  I'm a photoshop-maniac! I'll never be a good at coloring traditionally with markers. I use a scanner and photoshop. Like I said I'm so impatient that I use my iPhone to scan sometimes.

I'd like to thank Kaan Demircelik again for his time and for his awesome art work. I highly encourage you to check out his Tumblr page, his shirt site and Behance.

Get this man on Uncanny X-Men alongside Gillen and I'd actually start buying it again. Kaan clearly has the talent to draw a wide variety of character designs.

Or, better than that, give Kaan a top-notch writer to put out a creator-owned series with. I'd buy it.
