Image Expo - Plenty of Title Announcements

Image really brought out the big guns on the first day of their first Image Expo. I have to say that if all of us Bastards would have had the time to go we would have. Sounds like its an interesting experience to say the least and you can bet if it's back next year I'll be there. In the mean time enjoy some covers of the books they announced. You can figure out creative teams from the covers and I'll add my thoughts after each one because that's what I do!

I really hope that we don't have to rename this book,"Unhappy About Shipping Delays." I hope they have more than one issue done and isn't going to be like some previous Image books that received a lot of praise and hype only to never hit issue #2.

I'm there day one for this one. Brian Wood, creator owned, fuck yeah.

Oh look I lied you do need me to tell you what this is, it's "Bedlam" from Nick Spencer and Riley Rossmo. I love the cover, but I'm never quite sold on a Spencer book. His writing never comes across as genuine. We'll see how this book turns out.

Oops! Here's another one. It's called Planetoid by Ken Garing. It's actually already on Graphicly's digital app where I bought and read the first issue, but I guess iFanboy which is also part Graphicly encouraged Ken to take the book to Image. Probably a smart move, but we'll see. I'm sure iFanboy will give them great reviews from here on out... just saying. Also I'll have a review for the book soon so check back.

We already knew about this one, but damn I want to see some Quitely art again! I do like the middle finger that Millar gave Marvel and took all his toys and went to Image. Way better move on his part. I best MillarWorld becomes the next big Image imprint.

It's Niles so I'm there for at least one issue. He's started to loose his touch with a lot of his IDW titles, so maybe this new batch of Image books with reinvigorate him.

Same here, but I like the look of this one better. Tommy Guns + Comic = Dustin very happy.

I hate Chaykin's art and I'm not going to hide it. This cover doesn't look like his usual style though so I may give it an issue. I swear to god though if he doesn't get a new colorist then I'm fucking done on page one.

Really if you're a fan of this series then you're excited about this book, if not then you won't care. The first two mini-series were okay, but they didn't wow me like they did for others. The second series especially was pretty boring. Of course my first prints are worth a few bucks so I can't complain too much I guess.

Well this looks to be it from Image. I'm not sure if they have too much more they can talk about without making a bunch of promises they may not keep. I'm going to put money on a Todd McFarlane announcement either involving his return to drawing Spawn or some new shitty series that won't come out on time.

Brian Wood and Ming Doyle on a dystopian sci-fi = OHHELLYES.

Morisson/Robertson is probably worth taking a punt on. Even if it bombs the eBay resale value could be pretty big. Count me in for that one too.

I'm a big fan of Gillen/McKelvie's Phonogram, maybe just because I'm British and all of the BritPop references tap into my childhood/early teens, but I also think they both bring some very rare strengths to the talent-pool of the comics world and apart from Morrison/Quitely (they can both be late together) I cant think of many pairings that are better stylistically suited to each other.

Image are really throwing down the gauntlet to the Big Two this year and I applaud their ambition. Even though they wont outsell them they're basically saying "fuck you, we're making better comics and the best creators want to work with us" to Marvel and DC, and that can only be a good thing.
