Review: Peter Panzerfaust #1

What if Peter Pan was real and fought in World War II? Wellthat’s basically the premise of this series as the fictional character of Peteris infused into a more realistic surrounding of the second World War. The storyopens with a faceless reporter interviewing Tootles about his time with Peter. He says that it all began one day at the Orphanage as the German’s bombed thecity of Calais in France. The orphaned boys were left to fend for themselves and wereunsure as what to do, until Peter showed up and took them away from harm.

The story is pretty straight forward and simple. There isn’tmuch to explain other than Peter being an American and the rest of the LostBoys being French. Peter basically comes off crazy and irresponsible much likehe does in the fairytale, but now he has a gun and kills Nazis. Right now thereisn’t much to the story. It’s filled with typical moments that are to showcasePeter’s personality and gimmick’s such as flight. In this case it’s just Petermaking a jump that seems impossible to the other boys, but then all six of themnot only jump at the same time but also make it through the same small window.

The characters and the writing in general aren’t bad, but Iwas hoping that this story would really grab me and it didn’t. I have highhopes for the second issue as I feel the ground work has already been laid inthis issue. Hopefully the cheesy on the nose moments will be toned down andworked back in with more subtlety. Otherwise I really enjoy the concept ofPeter Pan in World War II going all IngloriousBasterds. It’s clever as hell, but it needs to crank up the cleverness inthe next issue.

I can see fans of Fablesprobably enjoying this book. Like I said the concept is great and nearly worththe price of the comic alone. It has a lot of work to do in the second issue ifit’s going to show its staying power and really hook the readers on the series.
