Review: Avenging Spiderman #3

Keep in mind that this book focuses on Spiderman as a memberof the Avengers.  But the Avengersshow up in the last few pages. That’s not bad because this story is actually quite good.

With a great blend of action and humor, AvengingSpiderman #3 follows the titular hero as herescues mayor J. Jonah Jameson from the subterranean Moloids who needed JJJ astheir champion.  In the previousissue Red Hulk stood in for Jameson as the challenger to the invadingUnderground Army.  Hulk ended upwith a sword in his gullet.

Spiderman gets Jameson to safety. Being a hero that he is, Spiderman takes on the invading army.  The outcome of that challenge was sheerfun.  Keep in mind that this bookis intended for teenagers.  I foundthe same sense of fun in this book that I encountered when Art Adams took overthe Fantastic Four.  Remember thestand in’s when the regular Four disappeared?  Hulk, Spiderman, Wolverine, and Ghost Rider.  It was a blast.  And you know what?  So was this little adventure.  Granted it won’t stand out in comichistory like the replacement Four will; this book nevertheless makes a greatissue for Spider-fans.
The artwork is standard for what you would expect from aMarvel book.  Madureira conveysgreat expression through the big eyes on Spidey’s costume.  I had no problem, and there were noerrant images to bother me.

My one gripe was the denouement that dragged out for noreason other than to slip in a joke at Red Hulk’s expense and to have theAvengers say something totally inconsequential.  But at least Marvel can say they were in the book.  Sigh.

While not a must read, this is a fun read.
