Nook Gets Some Exclusive Marvel Crap, Tells DC To Eat Shit
Monday, November 7, 2011 at 11:51AM I'm going to be serious for a moment to get all the information out of the way first. Barnes & Noble has announced their own tablet computer in their Nook line of e-readers. No doubt this is to compete against the Amazon Fire that was announced a few months back. Also announced was a deal with Marvel to get some of their more popular trades on their reader exclusively (although those words weren't used). So now you can read digital trades from Marvel on the iPad, their online store, Android devices and the Nook.

Here's the spin and why all of this is stupid. This Marvel deal is very likely in direct response to DC doing an exclusive deal with Amazon for the Fire.I haven't read the specs on the new Nook, but if this is just a rushed product to get something out to compete with the iPad and Kindle then this yet another example of B&N shooting themselves in the foot. Frankly I don't give a shit about digital trades unless its a book I haven't read and here's a big news flash: I'VE READ ALL OF THIS SHIT ALREADY! When you're only dealing with the Top 100 trades of each company and its shit that basically every comic read has already bought in single issue format or bought the printed trade then who gives a shit about a digital trade of Civil War or Watchmen. Frankly the only trades I by are indie graphic novels or amazing pieces of work such as Midnight Nation that I want to share with friends.

I don't know who you people are that are jonesing for the next chapter of New Avengers in trade format, but hey more power to you. Personally I find the concept of single issues and trades in digital format stupid. Why wouldn't you just create a bundle of the single issues like, oh say DARK HORSE COMICS! Seriously does the comic industry have so much pride that its not going to steal a good idea? A good idea that no one would call you on for stealing? Frankly I think this is all dumb and again if you pay for a digital trade more power to you, but I think your an ass-hat. What's equally ridiculous is the idea that now there is a device for each fanboy. Nook if you're a Marvel fanboy and Kindle if you're a DC fanboy everyone else that doesn't care will buy a Galaxy tablet or iPad. Phil Hester said it best that if you're struggling between the two devices then go to a comic shop and buy your trades there, frankly that's the smartest thing I've heard all day.
