Review: Elephantmen #36

Elephant –The Killing Season Part one of four is a greatstarting point to pick up this comic. I haven’t read the series to this pointand now I’m asking why not.  This is agood book very readable and intellectual; very defined art and colors for thetone of the book.

It startsout in North Africa; 2242 soldiers are down in a nursery of elephantmen on apeace keeping mission that goes wrong. One of the soldiers are bitten and hetakes revenge by killing the little one. At that point out comes the warthogfor security and it takes the solider out. The rest of the squad opens fire but it’stoo late for the little one and warthog are lost. Jump forward to 2259at government housing with an old lady talking to her cat talking about herneighbors which happens to be boiling the head of a warthog.

We now catch up with Hip being woken up witha recent case, a murder, but he also finds Miki sleeping next to him.  The day before yesterday 7:30 am we are therewith Sahara and Horn.  Sahara is meeting withGabbatha to talk about enlightenment and life. Horn is feeling that this man ofpeace can calm her down because he notices his bride to be is restlessness.  Which Sahara after talking with Gabbathacomes to the conclusion that she want to bear Horn a child. 8:17 am two diversare off the dock search for something. The diver in the water sees what they are looking for body bags.  He opens the first human then digs deeper andfinds more bags of many elephantmen. 9:06 am Miki finally wakes up realizing Hipis no longer there running late to work she dashes away.  On her way she thinks everyone is judging herfor the night before.  When she reacheswork she ends up stirring up more trouble. 2:24 pm in the corner room a man sit on the table with a bullet through thehead he was the one mutilating the Elephantmen.  We end at 6:04 pm with bodies being drug outof the water.

Thisbook is a great starting point for new comers like me.  Its very well written and capturesyou.  It has a good flow as it jumps fromcharacter to character which ties into the end. It is very intellectual writing with the ties in the emotions, religionsand grittiness of the story.  The artflows with the story full of detail and colors. The details of the characters makes them unique and life like i.e. Horn’sface change from a hard business man to shock when he hears Sahara wants to havehis child.  Just how Horn reminds me ofa godfather type character and Hip looking like a down trodden detective the city looks like a busy city and have a lifeof its own. It all goes well together.

Ienjoyed the book and look forward to more. I enjoyed how it flows even though it jumps around. I also don’t feel lostbecause I’m picking it up now and not when it started.  The one down fall is it didn’t capture me ina way where I couldn’t put the book down. The title "The Day Before Yesterday" and the time made it feel like Law & Order I was waiting for the sound effects afterward  It a great book and for new comers and I assumethe long time readers already know.
