Review: Army of Darkness: Furious Road #3

Army of Darkness: Furious Road continues its run of compelling storytelling and over-the-top violence in this latest installment. Issue three wastes no time picking up after last issues cliffhanger which revealed that a member of the Deadite virus survivor group has been infected. What follows is a gruesome dive into what makes The Evil Dead world so much fun. Ash and his new team regroup after a mysterious death and most fingers point to the Lord of darkness himself, Count Dracula. The way he appears here compliments the overall campiness and cheese factor of the series. It’s more entertaining to not take Dracula so seriously. He fits right in with all the other craziness.

AODFuriousRoad03-Cov-A-HardmanThings pick up when the true enemy is revealed. The scenes between Ash and the Deadite are still as creepy as ever. Even though there’s a demon inside of them the human host is still there smiling psychotically. One scene in particular had all the blood and guts I can handle in one sitting. You’ll know it when you see it! I felt an unexpected emotional tie to the group as whole when they eventually lose one of their own. Of course there were some pretty cruel humorous points in between but the aftermath was handled very seriously and there were echoes of the Walking Dead as the survivors mourned their loss.

Furious Road has been consistent with its writing and artwork since issue one. The build up from the last two issues was played out perfectly in this one and it feels like a bonus that we get two more issues of story set in this crazy world. The war between the Deadites and Ash is still fresh in this new series because the characters are so well written. I can’t wait for their war to continue.
