Alpha - The first one; the beginning.
The year 1984 and Judith Mayers is a spunky, go stick up your butt, little streetwise whippersnapper that sets the stage for the final days of the earth before the apocalypse. What is the catalyst for the end of days?
Strangely enough, a third-rate cosmetics company by the name of Moujou, concocts a pheromone that turns women that are exposed to it into a raged filled, crazed…zombie.
Girl - A girl is any female human from birth through childhood and adolescence to attainment of adulthood.
Put both of these together and you get Alpha Girl, a new mini by Image. It’s written by Jean-Paul Bonjour and the art work is handled by the likes of Jeff Roenning, Robert Love, Dana Shukartsi and Diego Simone. But most importantly of all it’s read by this Bastard, Kevin! Let’s see what’s really good with Alpha Girl.
It’s a zombie book. But before you witness the end, you must be forced to experience the past. Back in the day Judith and her baby bro, Buddy, had a rough childhood. They lost their mother to excessive partying and were put into the foster system. The brother and sister were both adopted and were forced to go their separate ways. As the siblings grew up, Buddy kept a massive chip on his shoulder and doesn’t take too kindly to his foster dad and ends up in juvenile hall, while Judith became hooked to nicotine, and bitter towards everything and everyone; awe to be a 17 year old girl again. Meanwhile, two lab jockeys are told their days of perfume creators are at an end and are forced to begin creating pheromones. But before they can analyze the first batch of results from a group of volunteers, things begin to change.
Sigh, Alpha Girl has a sassy little look and feel to it that centers on a dash of campy and a dash of whatever. The art style reminds me of something but I can’t for the life of me remember. It’s nothing amazing but it does the job. The writing is okay, everyone reads the same by coming off crass and being “always on”. It pulls the “breaking the forth wall” and tells you the story that’s already taken place. Not a big fan of that. I’m still not sure why it has to take place in the ‘80’s; it didn’t really seem to play into the story other than to put Judith in a more reverent Ramones shirt. I get it; she’s not to be fucked with. But it’s still early in the narrative so who knows. Oh yeah and it’s a zombie book, I almost stopped reading it just due to that.
